diva of dynasty {diahann carroll}
diahann carroll has done plenty during her six decade long acting/singing career. so, for time and space sake, lets just stick to the biggest and most memorable achievements. diahann was the first black woman to receive a tony award for her performance in 'no strings' back in 1962. she also received an academy award nomination for best actress in 'claudine.' in 1968, diahann would again make history by portraying the title role of 'julia'on the small screen. this would be the first time a black woman had her own show and didn't play a stereotypical or demeaning role. diahann would continue that legacy in 1984 by portraying the glamorous diva, dominique deveraux (blake carrington's half sister) on the nighttime soap dynasty. and who could forget her role as marion gilbert (whitley's snobby mom) playing foil to patti labelle's character on the hit show 'a different world.' diahann, although now in her late seventies, has shown very little sign of slowing down. quite recently, she has had roles on 'grey's anatomy' and the USA hit show 'white collar.' she even penned a very successful autobiography. black girl bravado applauds mrs. diahann carroll for paving the way for all the black girl thespians who now walk a less bumpy path.
