brianna mccarthy and i have a few things in common. besides being chubby cheeked girls with caribbean backgrounds, we both have a great interest in "examining issues of beauty, stereotypes and representation..." (her words via her website). unfortunately, what we don't share is her exquisite artistic talent. the trini native is a self taught creative genius who expresses herself through various mediums. portraiture, murals and doll making are just a few of the ways in which she shares her artistic thoughts with us. in my opinion, mccarthy captures the beauty, complexity and humanity of women from the African diaspora. some of her dedicated fans have even used her sketches as inspiration for their tattoos! well, whether on my skin or my walls, i look forward to owning a brianna mccarthy piece in the near future.
